Poetry

Ode to Bob Dylan

by John Hansen Â© 2015

Born as Robert Zimmerman

Bob Dylan better known,

His talent as a songwriter

Has around the world renown.

An American folk-singer,

Woody Guthrie inspired.

Protestor, artist, activist,

‘Beat’ Generation admired.

Inscrutable and unpredictable

Allusive poetic words.

Literary masterpieces,

Hit songs for The Byrds.

Songs like Chimes of Freedom,

All I Really Want to Do,

Mr Tambourine Man,

It’s All Over Now Baby Blue.

Music that has meaning,

Songs for the common man,

That fight against injustice,

And for freedom take a stand.

Allen Ginsberg’s howling,

And Kerouac’s on the road.

Woody Guthrie why, oh why,

On Desolation Row.

Contemporaries respect him,

The lesser come and go,

But Dylan’s music never dies,

I forgot more than you’ll ever know.

This is my second published hub of poetry and it's theme is aimed at the child in us all. Most of the poetry in here is light hearted and whimsical, or hopefully has an underlying message of hope or good will.

"The Dragon's Gate

She played by the rusty old rickety gate

In the falling down wood picket fence,

Whenever she went to Grandma's house.

To her family it didn't make sense.

Butterfly

by John Hansen (c) 2012

Butterfly upon a flower

Many realize not your power.

See your beauty and your grace

Watch you fly from place to place.

Without knowing what you are

Children place you in a jar.

Without you, no flowers we'd see

Pollination could not be.

If I could write a love poem

I’d write it just for you.

I’d pull the stars down from the sky

And stick them in with glue.

I’d climb the Himalayas,

Scale Everest’s highest peak.

I’d sail across the oceans

For the treasures that I seek.

If I could write a love poem

I’d rip pieces from my heart

And place them in your open palms

To ensure we never part.

I’d go to war-torn countries

To learn about despair,

So my words would have feelings

That only I could share.

If I could write a love poem

I’d toss pepper in my eyes,

So you could feel my love for you

In every tear I cry.

I’d swim the raging river,

Though the river is too wide.

Like Running Bear to White Dove,

Just to be right by your side.

If I could write a love poem

You’d never put it down,

Because it means that you’re my Queen

And the words would be your crown.
